How to Enter

All submissions to the 2019 Mississippi Heritage Trust exhibition must be submitted through the contest platform ArtCall. The call for entry will open at 9am CST on June 19, 2019 and close at 11:59pm on August 31, 2019. No mail-in submissions will be accepted. Please read all terms and conditions before entering.

 

 

What to submit

  1. Your submission can include up to 10 images of any of the past MHT Most  Endangered Sites (see list of 110 locations across the state). The work can be from the past or an interpretation of it currently. Two-dimensional, mixed media work accepted.
  2. A brief bio telling us who you are as an artist (250 word limit)
  3. CV (Finalists will be required to email a CV in pdf format to preservation@mississippiheritage.com)

 

 

Fee

There is a $30 fee per submission (10 images = one submission). All fees are paid upon submission through ArtCall and are non-refundable.

 

 

Commencement Event & Traveling Exhibition

The jurors will select finalists for the exhibition.

 

  • The finalists will be officially announced earlySeptember 2019 and their work will be featured in an exhibit at the MHT 20th Anniversary Exhibition in Jackson, Mississippi from October 24th to November 30th, with the event on October 24th. 
  • Artists are responsible for sending in their selected pieces as prints, with the image sized to 16x20 or smaller. MHT will be responsible for matting and framing the selected works.
  • The artist will receive 30% of the silent auction sale of their work on October 24th, with the remainder going to support the work of MHT.
  • Selected artists will be invited to participate in a traveling exhibition planned for 2020. The artist will receive normal gallery commission on any further sales.

 

 

Jurying

Jurying will begin once the call for entries has closed. The 2019 jury consists of Due South Co., Ashleigh Coleman, David McCarty, Ellen Rodgers, Ryan Steed. 

 

All jurying will be done anonymously. All decisions made by the jurors are final.

Q: What are the image specifications?

A: Images should be uploaded as JPEGs. Specific image dimensions can be found on ArtCall.

 

Q: What should I name my image files?

A: You don’t have to worry about file names. There are optional fields on ArtCall for image titles and image captions.

 

Q: How many submissions can I enter?

A: Applicants can enter up to 10 images per submission. 

 

Q: When will I be notified?

A: All entrants will be notified by email in September 2019.

 

Q: Does MHT cover printing and shipping work to the exhibit in Jackson?

A: Artists who are selected will be responsible for the costs associated with printing and shipping their work to MHT for the exhibition. MHT is responsible for matting and framing the piece. MHT is not responsible for pieces lost or damaged in transport. If this is a concern, please insure your work with your mail carrier.

Q: When is the work due at the MHT?

A: All work must be received by September 15, 2019.

 

 

Image Guidlines:

  • Images may originate in any format, including but not limited to digital files, digital prints, color transparencies, color prints, cyanotypes, tintypes, or black and white prints — so long as they are submitted electronically.
  • Previously published material for which non-exclusive rights were granted may be entered as long as you still maintain the right to grant MHT a license.
  • For a photograph in which a person is recognizable, you must be able to provide a model release from the subject or, in the case of a minor, the subject’s parent or guardian and provide it to MHT upon request. You do not need to submit it at time of entry.
  • Each submitted photograph, in its entirety, must be a single work of original material taken by the applicant. By entering the competition, entrant acknowledges that the submitted photographs are original work created solely by the applicant; that the photographs do not infringe on the copyrights, trademarks, moral rights, rights of privacy/publicity, or intellectual property rights of any person or entity; and that no other party has any right, title, claim or interest in the photographs. Photographs that violate or infringe upon another person’s copyright are not eligible.
  • The photographs entered must not, in the sole discretion of MHT, contain obscene, defamatory, or otherwise objectionable content. Entries deemed inappropriate will be disqualified.
  • Finalists may be asked to submit a high-resolution file of at least 300 ppi at 12 inches on the longest side. MHT reserves the right to disqualify contestants who are unable to provide a high-resolution file.

 

 

Eligibility:

All photographers of any level are eligible. Individuals affiliated with MHT, including current full-time or part-time year-round employees, board members, and their immediate families (children, siblings and spouses) are not eligible to enter. MHT shall determine winner eligibility in its sole and absolute discretion. This contest is not available in all countries, states or provinces where rules translation, registration, or bonding is required, and is void where prohibited.

 

 

Use Rights:

Entrants retain all rights to their work. Entrants must own and have exclusive copyright to all images they submit. By submitting to MHT, entrants grant the use of images for the purpose of marketing by MHT and for display on the MHT websites. As conditions of this permission, MHT shall attribute all photographs to the maker.

 

 

Privacy:

We respect your privacy. MHT will not sell, rent or exchange your e-mail address.

 

 

Legal Terms and Conditions:

  • This competition is subject to federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Certain restrictions may apply. Entries void if the jurors determines the entry to not be an original, or if the entries are illegible, incomplete, damaged, irregular, altered, counterfeit, produced in error or obtained through fraud or theft.
  • Participants also agree (a) to be bound by these Official Rules; (b) that the decisions of the Jurors are final on all matters relating to the competition; and (c) if he/she wins that the Mississippi Heritage Trust (MHT) may use each winner’s name, city, state, and photograph in any publicity or advertising relating to the exhibition. 
  • In the event that the selected artist is ineligible or does not ship work, the jurors will, in its sole discretion, with advice from the MHT, may choose whether to include another entrant in the exhibition.

 

Third Party Release/License:

Upon request by the MHT, each entrant must be prepared to provide a signed, written, personal release from all persons who appear in the photograph submitted, authorizing us to reproduce, distribute, display, and create derivative works of the entry in connection with and promotion of the gala, in any media now or hereafter. In addition, upon request by MHT, each entrant must be prepared to provide a signed, written, license from the copyright owner of any sculpture, artwork, or other copyrighted material that appears in the photograph entry, authorizing us to reproduce, distribute, display and create derivative works of the photograph in connection with any promotions of the competition. Failure to provide such releases upon request may result in disqualification.

Limitation of Liability:

By participating, entrants agree to release, discharge, and hold harmless MHT and each of its partners, affiliates, agents and its employees, directors, and representatives from any claims, losses, and damages arising out of their participation in the 20th Anniversary gala exhibition or any competition-related activities and the acceptance and use, misuse, or possession of any prize awarded hereunder. MHT assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, or delay in operation or transmission; communications line failure; theft or destruction of, or unauthorized access to, entries or entry forms; or alteration of entries or entry forms. MHT is not responsible for any problems with or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any e-mail entry to be received on account of technical problems, or traffic congestion on the Internet, or at any website, human errors of any kind, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to entrant’s or any other person’s computers related to or resulting from participation, uploading or downloading of any materials related to this competition.

 

 

Right to Cancel or Suspend Contest:

If for any reason the 20th Anniversary exhibition is canceled due to infection by computer virus, bugs, worms, trojan horses, denial of service attacks, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of MHT that corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this competition, MHT reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual(s) who tamper with the entry process, and/or to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the Contest. If MHT elects to cancel or terminate the competition, MHT will not retain any rights in the submitted entries and will return the entry fees.
